Week One

Lecture Summary

As the first week of this Unit, UPC0004, the lecture basically consisted of an overview of the semester to come and what specific outcomes are expected of us by the end of the run of this unit; These outcomes of which are to be developed in full by studying the six modules that form the basic structure of the unit, i.e. Using computers, online research strategies, communications, information management, building knowledge, and social & ethical issues. The lecture also informed us on: what types of assesments we will be undertaking as well as the conditions and protocols under which our assignments will be assessed; what basic responsibilities are expected of us as students (such as logging onto blackboard regularly and checking our student email); and it informed us on the reason why we're doing this unit and the importance of computing.

During the tutorial we were given our first tasks of the semester, being to follow the given workshop instructions. Our first task was to explore Blackboard and the ecu email service so that we can get familiar with them since they are both essential tools for this semester. We were then given the instruction of setting up a Blog account at http://www.blogger.com/ because this is where we'll be writing our weekly blogs for our major assesment, assignment one. As an extra useful tool for our blogs, we were also meant to set up an account with http://www.imageshack.us/, however, since I already have an account with http://www.photobucket.com/ which also converts uploaded photos into HTML code, I didn't find it necessary for me to set up an new account with a different site that provides the same service. We also learnt how to make screen shots which we'll use throughout our blog to illustrate the work we've produced for the tasks each week.
